Pleased with Punch
I’ve got a real soft spot for the jelly company Bompas & Parr. This is only the second time I’ve encountered them, but each time they’re up to something fun. Last time it was making a city out of jelly, or something like that; this time it’s a cocktail comp.
OK, so it’s all marketing guff, but it’s the sort I like. We have a laugh, they sell more stuff – it makes the world a lighter place; everyone’s a winner.
So this is the latest thing: They’re making some sort of monumental punchbowl to be filled with cocktails and distributed to the thirsty masses. The punchbowl is designed to be big enough that someone can row across it, so it’s like something Henry VIII would have come up with if he wanted to rub Louis XII’s nose in it.
I’m a dab hand at cocktailing, so I thought I’d have a crack at it. You had to use Courvoisier, so I thought ginger would be a good mixer, particularly for autumn, and pineapple would go nicely as well – so equal parts of each. Then the special bit; fresh black pepper. Mix ’em all up in a bowl, and serve with a slice of lime. Or if you’re feeling distinctly fruity, in a hollowed-out melon, covered in jelly animals, with a sparkler and some flags.
I’ve provisionally called it ‘Spiced November’, ‘cos it’s fairly autumnal without being Christmassy. And there’s bugger all else to do in November, so you may as well have a piquant little intoxicator. This is it in action:
